Brief Itinerary
 
Day 01:  Fly into Bhutan
Altitude:  2,320 meters
Distance: 48 km
Estimated driving time: 1 hour

Morning flight into Paro, Today after well rest we will drive to Paro. Visit to the National Museum, housed in the Ta Dzong (watchtower). Here an intriguing collection of artifacts provide a wonderful introduction to the rich culture and heritage of the Kingdom.

After lunch drive to Thimphu. The drive from Paro to Thimphu is spectacularly scenic. Magnificent monasteries and stupas in the valleys and mountaintops.

Welcome gift shopping.

In the evening the Group will be taken to one of the 1st and the oldest traditional store in the Kingdom and you will be gifted Bhutanese traditional dress. Gho (Robe), Tego (Inner tunic), Kabney (scarf) and Kara (belt) for men and Kira (skirt), Tego(Jacket) and Rachu (scarf) for women.

Day 02:  Thimphu (Full day sightseeing)
Some of the highlights of Thimphu include:

 

  • Change money at the Bhutan National Bank or at Local Authorized money changer.
  • Visit Memorial Chorten.
  • Purchase world’s most beautiful postage stamps.
  • Visit the Arts and crafts school and the Traditional Medicine Institute.
  • Observe traditional paper making from Daphnia and Edgeworthia.
  • Visit takin rehabilitation center where one can see Yak and Takin, the National wild animal of Bhutan.
  • Drive up to viewpoint and take a hike beyond to see the clear picture of Thimphu Valley.
  • Visit Changangkha Lhakhang and offer your respect to the important temple of the valley.
  • Visit the weekly Thimphu market.

Overnight Thimphu.
 

Day 03: Thimphu -Punakha -Wangduephodrang
Altitude: 1,300 meters
Distance: 71 km
Estimated driving time: 2 1/2 hrs

After breakfast, travel to Punakha through Dochula Pass (3,088m/10,130ft). Travel onto Punakha, the old capital of Bhutan and presently the winter residence of the central monk body. Visit the Punakha Dzong, located on the island of the Pho – Chu (male) river and the Mochu (female) river.

Evening, walk through the Metshina to the Devine Madman’s Monastery-Chhimi Lhakhang, famously known for its fertility shrine, where one can receive a special fertility blessing .Overnight at a hotel in Wangdue/Punakha.
 

Day 04:  Punakha (Rafting)

After breakfast, hike through pine forest and farming fields along the bank of Pho Chu River for about 2 hours until you reach Samdhingkha, where your rafting crew will be waiting. After a debriefing, you will start rafting along the rocky Pho Chu River coming across exhilarating stretches of Class II and IV rapids.

Accompanying this fine stretch of river are beautiful landscapes of farmlands, hills dotted with monasteries, and forest areas full of birdlife. Enjoy lunch on a sandy embankment close to a Chorten. The post-lunch rafting session will continue until you reach the relatively placid section of the river below the imposing Punakha Dzong.

Night at your hotel in Punakha/Wangduephodrang.
 

Day 05: Drive to Bumthang valley.
Altitude: 2,650 meters
Distance: 198 km
Estimated driving time: 8 hrs

After breakfast, drives to Bumthang via Pelela pass at the altitude of 3,150 meters, a wonderful opportunity for photographs. En-route stops at Chummy village to visit yathra weaving central. Which Yathra are made into colorful scarves, bags, blankets and sweater. Continue drive to Bumthang. Mingle with the locals and overnight at the hotel.

Day 6: Bumthang valley sightseeing tour.
Today we will visit the 7th century Jampa Lhakhang.Jampa Lhakhang is one of the oldest temple in Bhutan. Later we will go to Guru Rimpoche’s Kurje lhakhang and offer our prayers ( Kurje means “Bodily Imprint”, on the rocky cliff of the temple one can see the Bodily imprint of Guru Rimpoche where he meditated in the 7th century.

Optional: We will drive to upper valley the Thangbi Temple. Tangbi temple is located on a plateau above the Chamkhar River north of Kurje Temple. The 4th Shamar Rimpoche, one of the two highest ranking lamas of the Karma Kagyu religious school came to Bumthang from Tibet in the 15th century in order to establish a monastery. In 1470 he founded Tangbi, located in the middle of a wide, fertile plateau overlooking the river .

After Lunch visit Tamshing Lhakhang. This temple is also known as Tamshing Lhendrup Chholing (Temple of the Good Message).
 

Day 07: Bumthang – Phobjikha:
Altitude: 2,900 meters
Distance: 188 km
Estimated driving time: 7 hrs

After breakfast drive to Trongsa. And then Visit Trongsa Dzong – seat of the district administration, built in the 1648. And visit Tower of Trongsa -­­­converted into the museum from watchtower that once guarded Trongsa Dzong from internal rebellion, stands in Bhutan’s history.

Then drive to Phobjikha after lunch. Overnight will be at hotel.
 

Day 08: Phobjikha-Thimphu
Altitude:2900 meters
Distance: 135 km
Estimated driving time: 6 hrs

After breakfast, travel back to Thimphu. we will have breakfast at Punakha or at Dochula.We will be staying overnight at Thimphu and go around the town and visit any places you desire.
 

Day 09: Thimphu-Paro
Today we will drive to Paro and relax in paro.
 

Day 10: A Day Hike to Paro Taktsang Monastery.
Tshog offering, private Prayers and meditation at Taktsang.

After breakfast, drive up to the base camp of Taktsang and then hike up to the most famous Monastery in the entire kingdom of Bhutan perched on the edge of a steep cliff, about 900 meters above Paro Valley. The hike to the viewpoint will take about an hour and it will take 2 hours to the monastery. Lunch at the viewpoint or at Paro town. Overnight at a hotel in Paro.
 

Day 11: Departure from Paro

In the morning, your tour guide from Yelha Bhutan Tours & Travels (local Bhutan travel agent) will escort you to Paro International Airport for your departure.
